Animation of the Mass
Choirs wishing to animate in song the Vesper Mass from Monday to Saturday and the hourly Masses on feast days in Saint Peter's Basilica should contact the head of the Musical Chapel of the Vatican Vicariate. Confirmation of the date and time will be sent to the applicant by the Vatican Vicariate, with the clause “barring unforeseen circumstances”.
From Monday to Friday, the Ordinary of the Mass is in Gregorian chant (from Liber Usualis: Kyrie – missa XVI in feriis per annum, Sanctus e Agnus Dei – missa XVIII).
The Choir sings in its own language or in Latin in the following moments of the Mass:
- Entrance hymn
- Offertory (a chant lasting a maximum of 2 minutes)
- 2 Communion chants
- Final hymn
On Saturday and Sunday, Mass is in Italian and the Choir sings in its preferred language:
- Entrance chant
- Offertory (a chant lasting a maximum of 2 minutes)
- Communion chants
- Final hymn
In the choice of chants, always keep in mind the liturgical period, especially Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
