Visits

The following sites are accessible to pilgrims and visitors:

- Saint Peter’s Basilica

- The Treasury Museum of Saint Peter’s Basilica

- The Dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica

- The Vatican Necropolis

- The Vatican Grottoes

For some of the listed sites, dedicated tour guide visits and audio-guide services are available.

All tickets for guided tours are available from the Tour Desk, located in the portico of Saint Peter’s Basilica. The Fabric of Saint Peter provides specially trained guides at the Basilica for pilgrims and visitors. The guided tour service of the Basilica may be requested only at the Tour Desk, located in the portico of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Before entering Saint Peter’s Basilica, visitors are required to deposit prams, luggage, suitcases, backpacks, container packs and in general any objects which, due to their size and characteristics, are not considered suitable by the staff in charge, in the cloakroom. The cloakroom service is free of charge.


Dress policy

The following are some rules to be observed regarding clothing in the Basilica:

- long or below-knee trousers;

- skirts below knee length;

- covered shoulders for all visitors.

Furthermore, in the Basilica it is forbidden to:

- use telephones;

- smoke;

- consume food and drink;

- bring animals or bulky objects.

Free admission and reductions

Tickets are free of charge for:

- children up to their sixth birthday (accompanied by at least one parent);

- disabled visitors with certified invalidity of over 74%; free entry will be extended to an accompanying visitor).


Tickets are reduced for:

- children from 6 to 14 years of age;

- groups of students, upon presentation of a request on original letterhead paper of the Institute, signed by the Head Teacher (one accompanying teacher may enter free of charge);

- groups of students, upon presentation of a request on original University letterhead paper, signed by the Director/Rector (one accompanying lecturer may enter free of charge);

- groups of seminarians upon presentation of a request on original letterhead paper of the Seminary, signed by the Rector (one accompanying priest may enter free of charge);

- groups of pilgrims accompanied by a priest or member of the relevant religious Institute, upon presentation of a request on original letterhead paper of the Institute, signed by the parish priest or the Superior (one accompanying priest may enter free of charge).


Visits with own guide

Besides visits with guides authorized by the Basilica, guided tours not provided directly by the Fabric of Saint Peter are also admitted.

Such visits can be made subject to registration at the Tour Desk located in the portico of Saint Peter’s Basilica, with the provision by the Fabric of Saint Peter of a radio guide for each visitor in the group and the radio guide transmitter for the guide.

It is compulsory to register all groups made up of more than four visitors, at a cost of €1.50 per visitor.

The maximum number allowed for this activity is 30 visitors per guide.


Visits can be made:

- from Monday to Saturday, from 9.30 to 17.30 (last admission at 17.00);

- Sunday and Vatican holidays, from 13.00 to 15.30 (last admission at 15.00).
