A New Mobile Protective Barrier Installed Around the Altar of the Confession

In order to raise the level of protection and security, both active and passive, at the Altar of the Confession, the Fabbrica di San Pietro has put in place a mobile barrier to complement the surveillance measures already in effect.

The solution adopted is entirely reversible and independent, with no anchoring to the existing structures. It can be removed easily and quickly, and features highly transparent polycarbonate panels with minimal visual impact, in full respect of the basilica’s monumental, artistic, and architectural setting.

The measure became necessary following repeated intrusions by unauthorized persons into the area surrounding the altar, resulting in acts of vandalism and sacrilege which, in addition to constituting an affront to the sanctity of the place, endanger the offenders themselves as well as the safety of the architectural elements and liturgical furnishings.
