Vatican City, 23 JULY - In the presence of the Archpriest of the Vatican Basilica, Card. Mauro Gambetti ofm conv., and the Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, Dr Paolo Ruffini, the new sound system of St Peter's Basilica was inaugurated, the result of the collaboration between the Fabbrica di San Pietro and the Dicastery for Communication.
After almost twenty-five years, a new digital infrastructure has replaced the analogue sound system installed in the years leading up to the Jubilee of 2000 with around 80 new speakers. This work is part of the general project to innovate the various technologies supporting the Vatican Basilica and the more than 50,000 pilgrims and visitors who enter it every day.
The new sound engineering project, with the transition to the digital broadcasting system, involved the reclamation of the floor cabling, which was renewed with more than a thousand fibre optic cable headers, and the implementation of a dedicated data network protocol.
Prior to the decommissioning of the previous system, a sound analysis was also carried out, which will allow the constant comparison of sound quality and its optimisation.
